Riverview High School- Sarasota, FL

Our next stop on our visit is to Sarasota, FL. Sarasota is located on the west coast of Florida, and it is 18 hours away from Ashland University. Not only is it sunny, but it is far away from all of the Ohio snow!

Our cooperating school in Sarasota is Riverview High School. Riverview houses grades 9-12, with over 2500 students attending. Over half of last year's graduates went on to post-secondary education, with the majority attending universities. Riverview was ranked as one of America's Best Schools in June, 2010 by Newsweek.

There are many opportunities for students at Riverview High School. Some of these opportunities include AP programs, small learning community programs, dual enrollment programs (allows students to take both high school and college courses), ROTC programs, performing and visual arts programs, interscholastic athletics, and executive internships. Students at Riverview are exposed to many experience opportunities that equip them with post-secondary education skills, as well as real-world applicable skills.

An academic benefit available at Riverview is the International Baccalaureate program. Principal Linda Nook explains, "The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has been authorized at Riverview High School since January 1999. This year we will celebrate our eleventh graduating class. The current enrollment in IB, grades 9-12, approaches 700 students. The languages offered in our diploma program are English, French, German, and Spanish."

Principal Nook says of the faculty requirements: " The faculty is highly qualified and experience with 76% of the instructional staff who have six or more years of experience.  Eighty five percent have advanced degrees and 10% are National Board Certified." Faculty members also must be committed to not only furthering student education, but providing them with social skills that make them useful in society.

There is much more to explore about Riverview High School. For more information, please visit their website here.

We will be featuring our student interns at Riverview at the end of this week. We invite you to come back and learn about the extraordinary journeys of these two students.
